Project canvas

So it sounds like we're going to get a standardised platform for watching TV over the internet. Hope you've upgraded your broadband...

I heard on CNET UK's podcast and then eventually read on their website that there's this thing called project Canvas. Apparently various TV companies have been trying to sort it out and provide a unified platform for delivering TV content across the Internet. My first reaction was "great, even more reason for me to buy an iPad".

With services such as BBC iPlayer and TV Catchup already out there this for me has been a long awaited development. The latest news is that the BBC Trust has approved the project and so it's getting closer to becoming a reality.

As well being very convenient for viewers, and hopefully providing a standardised way to access ALL TV on demand, I can imagine this is going to be a God send for all those TV  advertisers trying to work out what to do with this Interweb thing. Not only will they be able to gather much more accurate viewer metrics it's going to be much more straight forward to target advertising to specific audiences.

As old Bill Gates had been harping on about the PC is slowly becoming our single source of entertainment. Furthermore, the PC and TV is slowly merging into a single device that we'll use to watch TV and film as well as surf the web and access online services. Looking forward to seeing the Apple 40 inch touch screen TV!

I think us web designers may still have a job in the future...
